Logan Children’s Justice Center connects to child abuse diagnosis computer system

On May 15 the Logan Children’s Justice Center will connect to a new secure web-based computer system, TeleCAM™, which allows online collaboration with child abuse experts at Primary Children’s Medical Center. The Logan CJC is the first to be added to this system since it was piloted and perfected with the Children’s Justice Center in Ogden, Utah.

This system is the first of its kind to provide a secure method to communicate medical information through the web to a remote site. The software, developed by VisualShare, is specific to child abuse, provides workflow documentation and the ability to collect data for research and analysis.

“We have made the workflow easy and specific to child abuse examiners,” says Chris Cochella, chief operations officer for VisualShare. “We listened to our customers so we could provide exactly what they needed.”

“Before this software was developed, there was no secure system for reviewing photos from a remote site,” says Lori Frasier, M.D., medical director of PCMC’s Safe and Healthy Families Medical Assessment Team. “With this system, photos are joined with other case information in a complete record that is safe, accurate and provides real-time consultation.”

All information is stored in one place on a secure server. Nothing is sent via email, except for notification that the medical file has been uploaded for review. When the physician at Primary Children’s Medical Center receives the email notification, he or she can then log on to the secure server with an encrypted password to access the file.

This system is especially important to Children’s Justice Centers in rural areas, where there are no medical experts in child abuse diagnosis available for consultation. Currently Primary Children’s Medical Center physicians review approximately 1,000 cases of suspected child abuse per year from remote areas of Utah. The CJC staff in other areas of the state will be trained on TeleCAM™ over the next few months.

TeleCAM™ is web based, which means users do not need software installed in their computers to access the system. In addition, the physician can review the information from any computer with an internet connection.

TeleCAM™ creates a pediatric child abuse specific consultation record that is secure and private. It contains built-in checks to ensure valid information for reducing misdiagnosis. It also provides a method for collecting case material for training and education.
